Steeped in History
It’s hard to imagine that the Sandbanks of today had such humble beginnings as an uninhabited peninsula of sand crossing the mouth of Poole Harbour on the English Channel. It is now internationally known as one of the most covetted place to live and visit in the world.
Just 100 years ago in the late Victorian era, this relatively inoquous sandy wasteland was cut off from the mainland and unrecognisable from the famous coastal holiday resort of today.
By 1911, all the roads in Sandbanks had been constructed, yet it wasn’t until after World War I that the area truly experienced a surge in popularity. This growth was facilitated by the inauguration of the steam-driven chain ferry to Studland in 1926. Subsequently, a notable influx of new houses and bungalows began to dot the landscape.
The region’s advancement faced a setback during the Second World War when it was designated a restricted military zone. Residents who remained had to secure a special pass for access to and from their homes. It wasn’t until the 1960s, following the relaxation of post-war restrictions on building materials, that development on the peninsula took off in a manner recognizable today. Nevertheless, Poole’s Town Planners consistently advocated for restricting the height of any new development to below the tree line, aiming to preserve the original atmosphere.
Today Sandbanks has gained a reputation as a sun-soaked millionaire’s playground and the 3rd most expensive place to live in the world. Property in Sandbanks sell for £millions but with unique, stunning scenery, access to watersports facilities and world-renowned yacht clubs it’s not hard to see why. It also now attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors and holidaymakers every year who are looking to experience the lifestyle of the rich and famous.
