Renowned for its fine golden sand and sparkling, crystal-clear waters, Sandbanks is the UK’s ultimate coastal destination.
Holding more consecutive Blue Flag awards than any other UK beach, it offers a safe, gently sloping shoreline perfect for families, swimmers, and sun-seekers alike. Enjoy breathtaking views stretching across the English Channel towards the Isle of Wight and the Purbeck Hills.
Sandbanks boasts premium, well-maintained facilities designed for a comfortable day by the sea.
You will find clean public toilets, outdoor showers, and free drinking water stations conveniently located near the main pavilion. Seasonal sunbeds, deckchairs, and parasols are available to hire directly on the sand, alongside excellent accessible features like Mobi-Mats and beach wheelchairs.
Your safety is a top priority. Professional RNLI Lifeguards patrol the main stretches of Sandbanks Beach every single day from May through to the end of September.
For the safest experience, always ensure you swim between the red and yellow flags, and never take inflatables into the water when the orange windsock is flying.
A dedicated beach office is also on-site for first aid and lost children.
To keep these golden sands pristine and safe for bare feet, strict rules are enforced.
Dogs are not permitted on the main Blue Flag beach from May 1st to September 30th, though a fantastic year-round dog beach is available at the western end of the peninsula.
BBQs are strictly banned during the day and only permitted after 6:00 PM, and glass bottles are never allowed on the sand.
Boasting over three decades of consecutive Blue Flag awards, Sandbanks Beach sets the gold standard for the UK coastline. With its uniquely fine, golden sand and incredibly clean waters, it provides a Mediterranean-style escape right here in Dorset.
One of the biggest draws of Sandbanks is its natural geography. The beach features a very gentle slope into the sea, meaning there are no sudden, dangerous drop-offs. This makes it an incredibly safe swimming environment for young children and less confident swimmers. During the summer season (May to September), the beach is actively zoned by professional RNLI lifeguards. The red and yellow flags clearly mark the safest areas for swimming and bodyboarding, while black and white chequered flags separate the fast-paced watersports zones.
The Sandbanks community takes immense pride in the pristine condition of the peninsula. A dedicated team cleans the beach daily during the peak season, using specialist sand-sifting tractors to remove hidden debris. To help maintain this world-class environment, visitors are asked to use the extensive recycling bins provided along the promenade and strictly adhere to the local BBQ and litter regulations.

Sandbanks is committed to making its golden sands accessible to everyone. The main beach office provides specially designed, balloon-tyred beach wheelchairs that can be borrowed on a first-come, first-served basis (a small fully-refundable deposit is required).
Additionally, during the summer season, BCP Council lays down “Mobi-Mats” near the main pavilion. These durable, roll-out pathways sit on top of the soft sand, allowing wheelchair users, mobility scooters, and parents with heavy pushchairs to easily navigate down toward the shoreline without getting bogged down. Accessible parking bays and disabled toilet facilities (accessible via a RADAR key) are situated conveniently close to the main beach entrance.
Can I bring my dog to Sandbanks Beach? Between May 1st and September 30th, dogs are strictly prohibited on the main Sandbanks Blue Flag beach. However, you don’t have to leave your furry friend at home! There is a designated, year-round dog beach located at the western end of the peninsula (heading towards the chain ferry).
Can I have a BBQ on the beach? To prevent burns from hot sand and reduce litter, disposable BBQs and open fires are strictly banned during the day. You may only light a BBQ after 6:00 PM. Please ensure you leave no trace, extinguish the BBQ safely with seawater, and dispose of it in the specially marked hot-ash bins on the promenade.
Can I rent a sunbed or parasol? Yes! During the spring and summer months, you will find licensed beach operators situated on the sand renting out high-quality sunbeds, deckchairs, parasols, and windbreaks by the day or half-day.
Are there jellyfish at Sandbanks? Like all UK coastal waters, jellyfish can occasionally be brought in by the tides and warming currents. The most common visitors are the harmless Moon Jellyfish and the mildly stinging Compass Jellyfish. The RNLI lifeguards monitor the water daily and will raise warning flags if there is a significant influx.
