Upton Country House & Park

A sprawling green oasis right on the edge of Poole Harbour, Upton Country Park is a beloved local treasure.

The estate is dominated by the stunning architecture of Upton House, a grand Georgian mansion built in the early 1800s. While the house itself opens for specific guided tours and events, the true star of the show is the 160 acres of surrounding parkland. With dedicated wildlife viewing hides, beautifully manicured lawns, and fantastic on-site tea rooms, it provides a full, peaceful day out away from the busy beaches.

Located just off the main A35 bypass, the park is incredibly easy to access for visiting drivers.

  • By Car: Follow the brown tourist signs off the A35/A350 junction. The park features a very large, pay-and-display car park that uses automatic number plate recognition (ANPR).

  • By Bike: The park connects directly to the local cycle network, meaning you can ride almost entirely off-road from Poole town centre directly to the estate.

  • By Bus: The local Morebus network runs frequent services that stop just a short walk from the main park gates.

Upton Country Park is fantastic year-round, constantly evolving with the seasons.

  • Summer: Pack a towel! The Walled Garden features a fantastic interactive splash fountain that kids absolutely love on a hot day.

  • Spring & Autumn: The woodland walks are spectacular as the seasons change, and the formal gardens are bursting with color.

  • Saturday Mornings: The park hosts the massively popular Poole ‘Parkrun’ every Saturday at 9:00 AM—a great, free 5k event if you are feeling active!

Upton Country Park prides itself on being an accessible, inclusive environment for all visitors.

  • The Paths: The vast majority of the park features wide, hard-surfaced, and flat pathways, making it highly suitable for wheelchairs, mobility scooters, and pushchairs.

  • Facilities: The park features standard accessible toilets as well as a fully equipped Changing Places facility located near the main car park.

  • The House: When open, the ground floor of Upton House is fully accessible.

The absolute best part about Upton Country Park is that entry to the estate itself is completely free.

  • The Park: The park and woodland are open every single day of the year, usually from 6:30 AM until dusk.

  • The Facilities: The Tea Rooms, Kiosk, and Walled Garden generally open daily from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM (closing slightly earlier in the winter months).

  • Parking: While park entry is free, parking charges do apply and are payable before you leave via the on-site machines or mobile app.

The Grandeur of Upton House

Standing proudly at the heart of the park is Upton House. Built in 1816 for the wealthy merchant Christopher Spurrier, this elegant Georgian mansion boasts stunning architecture and sweeping views down to the water. While the building is frequently used as a premium wedding venue, the ground floor and the grand entrance hall are often opened to the public for guided history tours, art exhibitions, and special seasonal events, including magnificent Christmas markets.

The Walled Garden and Summer Splash

For families and horticulture lovers, the Walled Garden is the jewel of the estate. Meticulously maintained by a team of dedicated gardeners and volunteers, it provides a quiet, sensory experience packed with colorful borders and rare plants. During the summer months, the center of the garden comes alive with an interactive, timed water-splash fountain. It is surrounded by perfectly kept lawns, making it the ultimate spot to unroll a picnic blanket while the kids cool off.

The Ultimate Dog-Friendly Destination

If you have brought your dog on holiday, Upton Country Park is an absolute must-visit. It is famous locally for being incredibly welcoming to four-legged friends. There are massive, designated off-lead areas where dogs can safely run through the meadows and woodlands. The estate even features a dedicated, self-service “DIY Dog Wash” station near the car park, complete with warm water and dog-friendly shampoo, so you can clean off those muddy paws before getting back into the car!

Shoreline Walks and Bird Watching

Because the estate borders the northern shores of Holes Bay (a tidal inlet of Poole Harbour), it offers spectacular waterfront walking routes. The paths meander through mature woodlands and open out onto the shoreline. The bay is a designated Nature Reserve and a vital feeding ground for wading birds. Make sure to visit the timber bird hide on the water’s edge, where you can peacefully watch avocets, black-tailed godwits, and kingfishers in their natural habitat.
