Studland Bay

Welcome to a true coastal wilderness right on the doorstep of Sandbanks.

Managed by the National Trust, Studland Bay remains blissfully free of arcades and concrete promenades. Instead, you’ll find sweeping golden sands, rare dune habitats, and crystal-clear waters. It is divided into four main sections—Shell Bay, Knoll Beach, Middle Beach, and South Beach—meaning you can find everything from bustling family hubs to quiet, secluded coves.

The journey from Sandbanks is part of the magic, requiring a short, scenic trip across the mouth of Poole Harbour.

  • The Chain Ferry: Drive, cycle, or walk onto the Sandbanks Chain Ferry. It takes just 5 minutes to cross the water to the Studland peninsula.

  • By Bus: The open-top Purbeck Breezer bus runs directly from Sandbanks, onto the ferry, and through the Studland village, stopping at the main beaches.

  • Parking: The National Trust operates large car parks at Shell Bay, Knoll Beach, Middle Beach, and South Beach (free for NT members).

Studland is stunning in every season, but your experience will vary wildly depending on the time of year.

  • Summer: High season brings glorious beach days and warm swimming waters. Arrive early (before 10:00 AM) as the car parks frequently fill up on sunny weekends.

  • Autumn/Spring: Perfect for brisk coastal walks, wildlife spotting on the heathland, and enjoying the beaches without the crowds.

  • Winter: A moody, dramatic landscape ideal for storm-watching and letting the dogs run free (seasonal dog restrictions are lifted in winter).

With four miles of coastline, accessibility varies across the bay, but the National Trust provides excellent facilities.

  • Knoll Beach: The most accessible point. It features disabled parking, accessible toilets, and a changing places facility.

  • Beach Wheelchairs: Specially designed all-terrain beach wheelchairs are available to hire from the Knoll Beach visitor centre (booking in advance is essential).

The beaches themselves are open all year round, but the facilities operate on seasonal schedules.

  • Car Parks: Usually open from dawn until dusk. Overnight parking or camping is strictly prohibited.

  • Facilities: The cafes, shops, and water sports hire at Knoll Beach and Middle Beach are generally open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM during the summer, with reduced hours in the winter.

Discover the Four Faces of Studland

Studland Bay isn’t just one beach; it is a four-mile stretch divided into four distinct areas. Whether you want a bustling family day out with ice creams and water sports, or a quiet retreat surrounded by nature, Studland has a spot for you.

  • Shell Bay: The very first beach you reach after stepping off the Sandbanks ferry. Backed by towering dunes, it offers spectacular views right back across the water to your accommodation.

  • Knoll Beach: The vibrant heart of Studland Bay. This is the largest beach, featuring the main National Trust visitor centre, a fantastic cafĂ©, water sports hire, and safe, shallow waters perfect for children. (Note: The far end of Knoll Beach is a designated naturist area).

  • Middle Beach: Slightly more sheltered and framed by low cliffs, Middle Beach is a favorite for kayakers, paddleboarders, and those looking to escape the busiest crowds.

  • South Beach: The smallest and most intimate of the four. Popular with locals, this narrow, sandy cove is closest to Studland village and the famous Bankes Arms pub.

A Haven for Wildlife

Behind the golden sands lies the Studland National Nature Reserve, a vast expanse of lowland heath. This is one of the few places in Britain where you can find all six native species of British reptiles, including the rare sand lizard and smooth snake. The dunes themselves are a delicate, shifting ecosystem home to rare wildflowers and insects, making the bay a paradise for nature photographers.
